Overview
koreader-tategumi is a personal fork of KOReader tailored for Japanese books. It introduces writing-mode: vertical-rl rendering support for EPUB novels and automatic right-to-left (RTL) page ordering for manga EPUBs and comic archives. The project is regularly synced with upstream KOReader (master/nightly).
Key Features
- Vertical Text Rendering: Automatically renders EPUBs containing writing-mode: vertical-rl in their CSS. For books lacking this, you can manually inject it via style tweaks.
- Automatic RTL Page Order: Detects Japanese manga EPUBs and CBZ/CBR/CBT comic archives with right-to-left layouts automatically upon opening (via OPF spine or ComicInfo.xml). Page turns and progress bars adapt accordingly.
- Related Plugins: Works alongside specialized plugins like bookends.koplugin (for vertical-rl text overlays) and koreader-skk (for SKK Japanese input and kanji conversion).
Using Vertical Text
Commercial Japanese novels with writing-mode: vertical-rl in their CSS will render vertically automatically. For other EPUBs, add the following via Document (page icon) → Style tweaks → Book-specific tweak:
```css
body { writing-mode: vertical-rl !important; }
`
Compatibility & Installation
Compatible with devices supported by KOReader including Android, Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook, Cervantes, and reMarkable. File-based OTA updates and KPM installation methods are supported depending on your device.
